The Camp of Sacrifice was just as he remembered it. Adam pulled the wagon behind the one in front of him and watched as others did the same until they had a complete circle. Men were already dismounting their wagons and tending to the tired oxen. The women were looking in the direction of the items that had been left behind and trying to keep the children in check, promising they could all go see what treasures lay in the piles after dinner had been served and put away.

Cannon rode up beside Adam’s wagon. “I see you are driving again. What happened to Josiah?”

Adam grinned. “I believe he and a certain young lady wanted to walk together.”

“You know you’ll have to scout ahead tonight then?”

He jumped from his wagon. “I’m aware.”

As if he knew they were talking about him, Josiah walked up to the wagon, leading Shadow. “Here’s your horse, Adam. Thanks for the free time. I’ll take care of the oxen.” Pink color filled the young man’s cheeks as he hurried to do his job.

“You are much too easy on him.” Cannon grinned, taking the sting out of his words.

Adam pulled himself into the saddle, aware of Maggie and his mother working side by side, preparing the evening meal. “He’s young and we still have a way to go to get to Oregon Country. He might as well have some fun now, while he can.”

Cannon’s gaze followed his. “How are you and the missus getting along?”

“Now that’s kind of personal, isn’t it?” It was Adam’s turn to grin.

The wagon master laughed. “Fair enough.” He turned his horse to move on to the next wagon.

“We’re getting along just fine.”

It was true. They were getting along fine. She was acting the part of a loving wife and he was doing his job as a wagon scout. They didn’t have that much farther to go until they got to Fort Laramie, and then he would surprise her with a wedding ring.

After leaving her tent that night, his mind had raced. The thought that she might find someone at the fort who took her fancy ate at him. What if she betrayed him with one of the soldiers or someone from another wagon train? Or even a trapper? Some of those men came from the mountains with the sole purpose of finding a wife to take back to their winter cabin.

Adam shook his head at the ridiculous thoughts. She would never give up Lilly May to move in with a stinky man who only came from his cabin a couple of times a year to turn in his furs.

To be fair to Maggie, she’d given him no reason not to trust her. Deep inside he believed Maggie wouldn’t betray him. She was still stinging from the loss of her late husband, Matt. Even last night, she’d compared him to her husband. It was obvious that Maggie didn’t trust men—him or anyone else. He hurt knowing she still didn’t trust him to do right by her.
